From hearing many of these performers in the past, and from both reading the works of Dr. Maya Angelou, and actually seeing and hearing her speak, this event... the Voices of Peace... will truly bring Hope to all who attend.
Karen: You deserve to feel good. I'm sure others have had the same or similar reactions after reading your posts on their blogs. You are a super gal. I feel a kinship with you because it seems we chase around the same blogs at about the same hour, which is, well, folks can read the time stamps!
Lucky Lucky Dallas Texas! She is truly a remarkable woman and an inspiration. I was lucky enough to see her once a few years ago. She is amazing.
Elaine: You can make it to this. Just tell everyone you're going shopping. Then, take Topanga Canyon Blvd south to Pacific Coast Highway, head down to I-10, and start driving East. When I-10 hits I-20, take that right into Fort Worth/Dallas. It's an easy drive... probably three days for you... but... if you leave now, you'll be here in plenty of time. That ought to be a fairly easy thing for the Queen of Topanga Canyon to pull off. LOL.
Seriously, Maya truly is amazing, and I think you'd really enjoy what promises to be a great performance... all taking place on the five year anniversary of the Invasion of Iraq. It is quite fitting that the first five letters of her last name spell "angel." I just read "Still I Rise"... and it gave me chills, too. Thanks for the link. Take care... hope your birthday was special ! I spent mine with Mollie :)
Karen Anne,
Maya Angelou has always been one of my favorites. She is just an amazing woman with a spirit that compares to none. I would love to see her in person.
One of my favorites ... I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
Oh Carol: It's such an easy drive. Get on I-75, hit I-71 in Cincinatti, then to I-65 down to I-40... drive west til you hit I-30 in Little Rock, then it's an easy drive right into Dallas. Hope to see you there :)
Carol, I believe this presentation... along with the symphony and the combination chorales will be a very memorable show. I wish all who have commented on this post could be there. Wouldn't that be great ! Take care...
Karen:
Great informational post about a great woman. I admire Dr. Maya Angelou she has made a huge impact throughout her life with her poetry. My very favorite poet however is Robert Frost. I guess I identify with so much of his work and thought on paper.
Thanks again Karen Anne... because of this reminder I had my daughter read Phenomenal Woman last night. Never too young for beautiful poetry & very important affirmations.
Renee: I think your description of Maya Angelou's "humble wholeness" truly conveys her spirit.
I must admit I had not heard of Marianne Williamson until your comment. Thank you for mentioning her. I have just very quickly read about her, and she also seems like a wonderful person. I have been to a few Unity Churches, and her attempt at severing her church's connection with the Association of Unity Churches was quite a bold move.
In perusing some of her theology and her beliefs, they in many ways parallel some of the facets of the early Gnostic Church teachings... and even some of the beliefs of the current interest being shown in Gnosticism.
I have read many, many books both on Gnosticism, and on the Gnostic Gospels found at Nag Hammadi, and, with this quick excerpt of Marianne Williamson's ideas, I feel I need to do some further reading and research on her theology. Again, Renee... thanks for sharing.
Believe me Karen Anne, that has already crossed my mind! She is renting right now, a high rise apartment in downtown, but I will definitely give her your name when she is ready to buy.
Tea with Maya Angelou? Deborah I would love to hear about that!
Chris
Deborah: I think Chris is a real gem... not only for posting me as a gem... but for simply being who she is. Hi Chris... Hi Rhiannon (waving across the cyberspace... .) Chris, thanks so much for thinking of me.
Deborah... Maya is just a very unique and special person. I don't think one could do much better than to aspire to emulate her integrity and wisdom. In looking back at the word "aspire"... I think I see the word "spirit" in it. Maya Angelou's spirit is just amazing.
I would love to have you either post about Carole's post in a "Gems" post. I would love to read it. Carole and her daughter having tea with Ms Angelou. What a story to be able to tell. Deborah, thanks for sharing.
