So Many Offices To Choose From...

It is such a nice luxury to have so many offices.  Most Realtors only have one office.  Some Realtors who belong to multi-office companies sometimes have several offices they can meet clients at.

Luckily... I have many "offices" I can use.  Room to meet my clients... often in somewhat of a private area.  I am sure many of you have met a client at your "main office"..., seated them in the conference room, and then walked into the "break room" for some coffee for them... only to find the coffee someone made six hours ago has turned into something just this side of mud.

That never happens to me !  Fresh coffee is always available... and in many different flavors.

That's because all of my "other offices" are Starbucks.

Here is a picture of one of my "offices."  This one is in Colleyville, Texas.  I have met clients there many times.  Starbucks is so easily recognizable... nobody has to search and search... drive all around to meet me.  I am so pleased.

I have probably visited five or six Starbucks locations and have used them as one of my "offices away from home."  I always try and visit each Starbucks just for coffee several times before I choose to meet clients there.

On my second or third visit, I usually chat with the manager or one of the cheerful folks at the counter... and the conversation usually gets around to real estate.  I then "ask permission" to occasionally meet clients there... and I am always cheerfully encouraged to do so.

I have never had anyone at Starbucks be anything but wonderful to both myself and my clients.  In fact, once the staff gets to know me... they cheerfully greet me by name, and seem to be even more friendly to my clients... if that is possible.

So... here's to Starbucks !  Thank you so much for your boundless hospitality !

Have you ever met clients at Starbucks ?

If you come to NY, you need to try Coffee Labs....its local to Tarrytown NY, near Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman Bridge...It's much BETTER than Starbucks.  I JUST wrote a blog about it - you can bring your dog too and they will have gourmet treats available for you and your pet! Go to this link.

I like meeting clients there, and I loke going to work there. I get so much done; no distractions. Especially if you go to a Starbucks that you do not normally frequent. Nobody knows you, and the solitude is fantastic. Also - you never know if someone will notice what you are working on and realize that you are in Real Estate.

I've been known to open a Tucson Starbucks at 5:00 in the morning for a client who can't meet me during the business day.  Thanks for posting, and congratulations on your feature!

KAREN ANNE:  As you can imagine, I am a big fan of Starbuck's because of my wife working there.  It is truly a great company, and the people that she works with are great also.  I"m not surprised that you are treated warmly when you go there.  Congratulations on your feature.

Great post.  We are eagerly awaiting the building of our first Starbucks in Sumter, SC!  We do have some local coffee houses, but I am not sure if they have wi fi.  You bring up a good point that the real office is not the only place to meet clients.  Sometimes McDonald's would be better than the real office depending on what is happening at the office.
Posted by Kim Peasley-Parker (AgentOwned Realty, Heritage Group, Inc.) almost 12 years ago
Coffee shops like Starbucks a great place to meet because they offer WIFI and their warm and inviting atmosphere.  Our Panera Bread also offer WIFI and some nice places to sit around a fireplace and work or chat.  Coming from CA where there was a Starbucks on every corner I am amazed as how few they have here in NC!

Karen, I used to work for a company that did not provide an office and I did business at my local coffee shops, mostly Starbucks. It worked. You don't have to have the "office". I met sellers in their homes and buyers at the coffee shops. It seemed very natural. I never felt at a disadvantage. It is you that is important to the client and how you can help them. Nice and cute post. Enjoyed it. Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi Ruthmarie:   I'd love to come to New York.  I can remember once during my carefree college days... I was at a friends home in Cleveland.  It was about 4:30pm Friday afternoon, and we were wondering what to do.  He suggested we go visit a friend of his for coffee.  I agreed.  Then he told me she was going to school at St. Bonaventure's in Olean, New York.  So... off we went.  We had a great time.  Ahhh... back in the days when my responsibilities were much fewer.  Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman Bridge... that all sounds too cool for words.   Thanks for visiting...

Hi Mike in Tucson:  Five o'clock in the morning.  Yikes !  I'm not sure I would be up to that.  I think the only way I could meet someone that early at Starbucks is if I slept overnight in my car in the parking lot.  Thanks for visiting...    Karen Anne

Karen, thanks for the reminder about Starbucks. They are everywhere and yes I do meet people there. I only wish their Internet access was free everywhere (it is if you're with T-Mobile). Seattles Best has free Wi-Fi internet for everyone. But with so many locations you can just about pop in anywhere. It's gotten to be a culture thing.

Hi Kim:  I bet you'll really enjoy your Starbucks.  And you bring up a great point.  Sometimes meeting clients at Starbucks or McDonalds IS much better than meeting at the office... as you said... "depending on what's happening at the office."  Meeting clients at an office that should be busy, but is deserted, can really make them wonder why the office is so empty.  Thanks for visiting... take care...

Hi Diane:  I am sure over time they will catch on in your area.  I had not thought about Panera.  I think there are some of those around... I'll have to look around.  With it almost being December... a fireplace would be nice.  Thanks for visiting...

Diane... I just googled Panera Bread.  There are two of them nearby.  Now I know where I'm having lunch tomorrow.  French Onion Soup... Yum !

Hi Bill:  Wow... I hadn't thought of that.  Yes, it is a nice, upbeat post.  Come to think of it... we need lots more of those.  I'm glad I helped you get started with my little story.  And, yes, sometimes I am sure some of the Starbucks folks may not be smiling until they put their Starbucks apron on... but after that... they surely are "all smiles."  That can be so hard to do.  Long ago I worked retail, and I know.  Take care...

Hi Paula:  I totally recommend meeting folks at Starbucks.  It's clean, it's "low key"... and it can really make your clients feel pampered.  Give it a try !  Thanks for your comment... take care...

Hi Gary:  Actually... I guess I will soon find out about "free access."  I have been holding out... but I guess it is finally time to get a laptop.  Starbucks will be a perfect place for learning how to use it.  I think there is a "Seattle's Best" at my local Borders... so I may give that a try.  Thanks for the idea.  I hope you had a pleasant Thanksgiving.  Take care...

Karen Ann...NO.  In fact I have never been in a Starbucks and I am not from MARS.  I'm not a coffee drinker so never even thought going there...I'm not even sure where the nearest one to me is.  It would be at least 30+ miles away.

Before I had high speed connection at my mom's in Connecticut I would take my trusty laptop off to Panera's.  Hope you have one near you.  They are very hospitable folks also plus they have great soup, salad, sandwiches, and goodies.  Who needs anything else?

Kathleen

P.S.  By the way, I'd meet anyone at Panera's even if they didn't write a contract.  That's how much I love the French onion soup (and everything else I've tried there.)!

Hi Kathleen:  There must be one somewhere in Fredericksburg.  I am glad you brought Panera's up again.  I need to go out and find one tomorrow.  And... I love french onion soup.  I usually go to La Madeleine for that.  Yow, you got me so hungry.  French bread and onion soup.  Yes, it can't get much better.  Well... french bread, onion soup and a quick-closing contract actually would be better.  Thanks for your great comments.  Take care...

Karen, I have not used Starbucks yet aas they are just making their presence known in our neck of the woods but Dunkin Donuts is often a place to meet with clients. Similar good service and coffee.

Hi Judy:  Dunkin Donuts is a good place to meet clients, too.  But... a problem exists.  Once I enter any type of store with the word donut in it... I have great trouble leaving.  Someone above suggested Seattle's Best Coffee.  I dib't know if they have free-standing stores, but I think they are in all of the Border's stores.  I will find out tomorrow.  Thanks for visiting...
Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) almost 12 years ago
Hi Marchel:  Yes, we do share offices.  Next time I see you... the coffee is on me !  I really like the Spring, Texas area.  Lots of trees... which is one of my "hot buttons."  Last time I visited the Woodlands, there was an interesting-looking place... a restaurant called Sweet Tomato, or something like that.  I bet that would make a good office, too.  None here in Fort Worth, so I need to write to them, and sell them some commercial land to build on.  Thanks for visiting, Marchel...

Hi Michael:  I don't know how much they love me... but if word of this blog post gets out, perhaps I will end up with some gift cards.  That would be nice.  Yes, lots of offices, everywhere.  Thanks for visiting...

I vote for PANERA!!!
Posted by Susie Roscoe, Real Estate Specialist | Brandon, FL (Signature Realty Associates) almost 12 years ago
Hi Teresa:  That is just great.  Usually I prefer places that are not chains.  They usually have more "character."  I was out today looking at Mac laptops.  If I'm going to use Starbucks and Panera as offices, I might as well "move in and set up shop"... LOL.  I am so glad you get cliens from your visits.  Thanks for commenting... take care...
Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) almost 12 years ago
Hi Susie:  I hear only the more successful agents can use Panera as their away-from-home office.  How do I know that ?  Well, I hear you have to make a lot of "dough" to work there... so it would only figure they would serve the more successful, "well-bread" Realtors. <grin>
Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) almost 12 years ago
What a great idea! Why didn't I ever think of this? Only I think Panera would have to be my office of choice. Our Starbucks is located inside Target.
Posted by Lisa Hill, Daytona Beach Real Estate (Florida Property Experts) almost 12 years ago
Hi Lisa:  Everyone must have a "plan B."  If those were my choices, I think I would choose Panera, too.  I think Panera even has a fireplace, so it couldn't get much better than that.  Thanks for commenting, Lisa.  Take care...

Karen Anne, Starbucks is one of my favorite alternative "office" locations.  So is Caribou Coffee.  It all depends upon which one is a particular client's favorite!

Hi Eric:  Starbucks or Panera Bread both work so much better than Krispy Kreme Donuts.  That is... they work better if you are trying to behave.  If you are being bad... give me Krispy Kreme every time.  Of course, with some Starbucks coffee... LOL.

Hi Roberta:  Yes !  Just pack up the ol' laptop and Come On Down !  It's a great place to relax, and if you sit there looking very Realtor-like... you just might have somebody walk up to you and ask... "Excuse me... are you in Real Estate ?  I need to sell my home."  Thanks for visiting...

What a great post and so true for many Karen Anne

Yes I've met others to talk shop at Starbucks, I wish I could say I love their regular coffee (I don't it's too strong) and I don't drink their sugary drinks (I'd rather eat my calories thank you very much) but the one on nearly every corner near me is full of nice employees and always kind enough to let me hang out as long as I need to.

Hi Karen:  Well, what Starbucks has done is create such an atmosphere as you describe... which of course encourages their customers to come there for other things besides coffee.  And then... what a surprise... when these folks who just go there to "meet" each other get there... of course, they have some coffee, or something else to drink.  Another one of those win, win thingies.  Karen, thanks so much for your kind words.  Take care...
