A New Source of Blogging Information on How to Do Stuff on

I guess it was always there... but it just jumped up and bit me right now.  I have no clue how many times it's been on the page, and I have just simply missed it.

I am talking about a great source for Learning Information about (that's the easy one)... not

I have been messing around... experimenting is probably a more "polite" word for it... with  Ever since the Active Rain mess about ten months ago with all the 502 Server Errors and all that other stuff... I have been trying to learn WordPress.

It's tough, cuz I have not been able to find a place where it is simply "taught."  So... it's been kind of "hunt and peck"... a little here, a little there.

So many of the tutorial videos on YouTube are so grossly outdated, or so poorly taught... that they are close to being useless as well.

But... a few days ago I found - Forums.

This section of the site has a very long list of questions that have been asked of WordPress... and the answers from the staff, and from other WordPress bloggers... and the discussions that have followed.

And... today, when I was just bored, and browsing the list of topics, I saw there was a question on changing type fonts, and increasing the font type size.

I clicked on it, and discovered that there was a question being asked... that I could actually answer.  ME !  Gawrsh.  I knew a WordPress answer.  Here is a link to that "miracle happening" : Typekit font for Coraline theme « Forums.  (My screen name on WP is MyOlderSister)

And when I learned what I shared in my "answer" to that question on the WordPress forum... I actually had to learn a smidge of HTML in order to DO it.  Which I did !

I am so excited.

Last Sunday... was my 67th birthday.  So I'm figuring... that with this NEW WordPress thingie info source... and my finally starting to understand this stuff... I just might be able to figure out what I am doing by my Seventieth Birthday.  How Cool is that ?

As you read this post and the comments, I think it would be great if those of you who already HAVE or outside blogs up and running... shared the link with us.  Also... is the blog a or a blog.

And... which "theme" are you using ?  And finally, if you have come up with a source of information, lessons, way to learn, or suggestions (besides our own The Art of Marketing You with marti garaughty)... please share it with us.  <grateful smile>

Karen Anne ~ first off, Happy Belated Birthday to you.  Second, I have wondered about WordPress as well.  If you think it is that easy, I may have a shot at understanding it.  I am, by far, a kindergartner when it comes to technology!  Thanks for the information.

Karen:  Terrific post for those of us who are also tempted by WordPress but not yet sold on it.  I will be watching the comments here carefully.  Happy Birthday and many more!

Dawn in #2:  Easy ?  Hey, if you are a kindergartner, then I just started PreSchool.  My head hurts from banging it against the WordPress wall... but it is gradually sinking in.  And... I am determined to do it.

What the former teacher in me wants to do... is to learn it SO well... that I would be able to start a little "mini-business" of teaching it (I love to teach) to some of the agents, lenders and title folk here in the Fort Worth area, for a fee, of course.

That would be so much fun for me... it really would.

My posts always get bunches of comments... and I am sure that either I, or one of my incredibly wonderful commentors, may have the answer.  Talk to me !

That is pretty cool, Karen Anne, hope you get a WP blog up and running. I've been thinking about it. Blogger is much simplier for a no thrills blog.

Ms Karen- isn't it wonderful to know that we can still learn something new!!! I started a blog a few years ago before I got involved with AR.  Haven't done much with it and need to revisit it before I share the info because I may just start all over again.  I see you posted this in the wordpress blog group so I'm going to take a look at that group too.  Good going... Ms Karen!

Plano, by the way, is where I first moved to... when I came "down here" from Cleveland in 1982.  And... my daughter lives in Allen.

Karen - I've got a new blog site in the works, on a Word-Press platform. I will send the link to this information to the person working on it for me.  Thanks a bunch, and Happy Birthday.  Mine is this week. So, we share our first and middle names, and are both Aquarians. How about that?

Miss Kathy in #7:  It just goes to show that you CAN teach an "Old Chick New Tricks" !  AR can be very time-consuming, and you have done so very well with your AR blog.

And YES... it IS wonderful finding out that I still am capable of learning new stuff.  I mean... new "TECHIE" stuff.  I am very touchy-feely.  Lots of intuitive abilities.  So this techie stuff is not only hard for me, it at times even "scares" me.  I can get to the point where I worry that if I press the "enter" key on something... my screen might MELT !

Yeah... at times it gets that bad.  <dorky smile>

hi Karen, first... belated Happy Birthday! Re "if those of you who already HAVE or outside blogs up and running... shared the link with us"...

As we speak, I'm redesigning my entire site using WordPress(self hosted on my own server) by stripping everything out of it. In other words... no header, no footer, no widgets. I wanted a super clean, elegant look with content as the focus. It's under construction but you can see what I mean on the main page

The rest of the site is done in HTML but that will be on Wordpress soon as well. I'll be writing more about this extreme blog/site makeover in upcoming tutorials to show alternate ways of using WP.

Miss Karen in #9:  I think that is way cool.  I just KNEW there was a reason I liked you so much.  <silly smile>  So, what day is YOUR Aquarius birthday ?

What WP platform will your new WP site be using ?  Get as specific as you can, so I might recognize it.  And please, send me, or give us... the name of the person working on it, or a link to their site, so I can go and check them out.  Lots of them have "portfolios" of the work they have already done... and I find looking at their stuff very interesting.

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) almost 10 years ago

marti in #11:  You are just too cool for words.  And your multiple-post series was so excellent.  I bought three domain names, have one of them registered to be hosted by midPhase... but I have no clue what to do next.

I also bought two other domain names from GoDaddy (yeah, I know.  I didn't know that was such a dumb move)... and know that I can somehow "send" them to midPhase to have them host them... but I don't know how to do that, either.  It's like there is this big scary brick wall around my brain.

So... I don't know what to do to make the next step with my domain name that is set for midPhase, and I surely do not know what to do to get my other two GD domain names over to midPhase so first be hosted, and then be activated.  And I certainly do not know how to download, or whatever, TwentyTen or Coraline to them.  <very dorky and crinkly-mouthed smile>

Also... please notice that I referred to you... in my comment #1.

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) almost 10 years ago

hi Karen Anne, you can point your GoDaddy domains to any web host including MidPhase. Unfortunately GoDaddy's back end is so unorthodox it's sometimes really hard to find how to do things but...

If you ask/email GoDaddy's tech support they should be able to give you a link or instructions on where to enter the DNS (name server info) MidPhase sent you.

Also, Twenty Ten is the WordPress default theme so you don't have to download or install anything, it will be there when you install WordPress on your own web host. ;-)

The reason I often recommend Twenty Ten as a starter theme is because you can easily change the header and background image and colors without knowing any tech stuff. I'll try to write about that in more detail soon.

Karen, you and I have very briefly discussed this on one of my posts where I linked to my site.  As you may, or may not remember, it's the Thesis Theme, which I've been told is very SEO friendly.  If I were you, I'd try to get started with a dot org wordpress blog site rather than a dot com.  I have great faith in your learning capacity and ability to think outside the box to make it work for you.  Why do I have the feeling in six months you'll be telling me what to do.  Oh, and here's a link you might find useful.

Happy Birthday Karen Anne - learning new things is the absolute best for keeping our brains young! Good for you to tackle this head-on. I have two sites in progress; not ready for prime time yet, just skeletal at the moment. I mostly know what I need to do, just no time to do it! Who would have thought I'd be this busy in January/February?

What I would love to know is whether there is a way to import our AR blog posts individually (as opposed to as an RSS feed) so that they can be classified into categories. Maybe someone further along than I can comment?

Here is my site in case anyone would like to see the theme (WordPress), which is real estate oriented:   just don't expect much content, lol!

Hey Missy Karen - somehow I missed your birthday. So Happy Belated Birthday. And I love the comment about maybe you'll figure it out by the time your 70!  I bet you get by this time next year or sooner. I know you - once you go for it - it's a done deal.  As for me I switched the company website to a wordpress blot last spring/summer. I had somebody build it for me but now I kind of wish I knew more. I'm learing little bit by little bit to change things around but I haven't had much time to dig into it yet.  That's why I was so excited to see Marti's series on Wordpress. Talk about a wealth of information - yikes!  Here's my site   Off the top of my head I don't remember the theme - it was an agent orientated one I'm sure. I also have the IDX thing going which clients seem to really like for searching homes.

And hey - Happy Valentines Day!

Geri in #20:  I think your At Home On Long Island - Thesis WP blog looks just awesome.  And, now that I went and took another look at it... I remember how much I liked it.

In some ways I suffer from too LITTLE information, but in some ways I suffer from TOO MUCH info as well.  Yours is Thesis, but many of the blog websites that I have seen that I like have been StudioPress Theme Demo - Mocha .

From what I know... Thesis and Genesis are different "parents" that have a variety of "child" themes... although both are blog platforms.

I barely know what I am talking about here... it takes awhile to sink in.  Somewhere I also think I read that Thesis was more complicated than Genesis... as far as learning.  So... being the "perfectionist" that I am... I allow that to tie my hands in a big state of "indecision."

Does any of this make any sense ?  And, Geri... do you know anything about comparing Thesis and Genesis ?

** Also... did you put your Thesis site together yourself, or did you hire someone ?  Email me privately, if you wish.

Hi Karen Anne, first HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! How wonderful, sorry I missed the "real" date.

I do have a Wordpress site, called A Slice of New Milford, and the theme I use is Atahualpa. I started with the standard theme, then wanted to have a header that was a bit like a slide show. I have enjoyed every minute of it, found it to be pretty self explanatory. And there sure is enough help, when I run into trouble I just hit Google to look for an answer. And I have been known to email marti a time or two.

My journey is always evolving on Wordpress! I have plans for more, hope to get them up and running one at a time of course, later this spring.

Happy belated birthday, Karen Anne!  What an interesting post!

I do not have WordPress site.  I don't know why I don't other than I am intimidated by the whole thing.

My question would be to everyone who is on AR and has a WordPress site, why do you do both?  Do you think it is worth the time/money investment?

I've bought a bunch of domain names too, but they're just sitting there gathering dust on the virtual highway, and I keep paying for them like some sort of idiot.  But I don't want to give them up either!

I am bookmarking this site to try to discern what you all are talking about.  I thought I was pretty savvy, but I admit that I just don't get it!

Hi Karen Anne, and happy belated birthday:-)  We use Headway when we build WordPress sites, but only because we like the way the code was written and are comfy with it.  It's SEO optimized out of the box, and with minor fixes to permalinks to suit a particular client, that part of it is a breeze.  That said, as with any framework, to get something to look and function the way you want to will require some coding, otherwise it looks just like any other site built in that framework, as do most of Thesis or Genesis based sites.  I would say that for a novice embarking on this journey on their own, it's a safer bet to try to customize the fail-safe 2010 theme than it is to tinker with Genesis or Thesis or Headway.  Frameworks were not really built for diy types without programming knowledge.  That said, in my humble opinion, Headway is far superior to the other two, as far as flexibility goes.  You can do literally almost anything with it, we think.

Here are some examples of recent WP headway stuff:

As for support, their forum rocks as do a few other sites put together by the active members of the forum. is a great source, as well as

I believe you have to have purchase the framework to ask questions on the forum, so I am not listing that here.

Best of luck to you with this...:-)

Posted by Steve Shatsky almost 10 years ago

Chris Ann in #21:  On no.  I am NOT talking about taking on HTML full force.  But I DID figure out that some text that cannot be copied and pasted just as it sits on the page... CAN be copied by flipping the intended text back to HTML... then highlighting it and clicking "copy"... then taking it to where you want to drop it... then make sure where you want to drip it is in the HTML mode.

Then hit paste... and then... all I know how to do in HTML is figure out where the wording for the size of the font is, and change the wording of it... and also add a paragraph if I want to... which starts with <p> and ends with </P>.  Then change it back to WYSIWYG.  That's all I know.  <another dorky grin>

IF I am going to learn it, it will be baby step by baby step.  But at least it no longer looks totally GREEK to me.

Hey... a new slogan just hit me.  From Greek to Geek !

And, if I "beat you to it" it is only because you probably "have a life" and I do not.  And thank you for the Birthday Greetings.

One thing about this techie stuff... is that it at times takes me forever to learn this stuff, but once I know it, and am comfy with it... I feel I can teach it to anybody... and do it in a much more simplified way... and in a much easier way to learn... than what happened when I first learned it.

As far as importing AR blog posts individually... as opposed to an RSS feed:  First, I don't know how to do that, and second, I don't even know what an RSS feed is.  I am very basic as to my techie knowledge, but I'm workin' at it.  I am guessing that you could direct that question to either Inna Hardison or marti garaughty... both of whom have generously commented on this post.

My new motto... From Greek to Geek !  Whaddya think ?

I took a look at your site... and really like it.  I clicked on the blog on it... and liked that even more.  I think if it were mine, I would have the website as you have it, with the blog on one of the pages, but also have some way that I could additionally have the blog itself be more central, and then have the website that those who originally came to the blog... to be able to bounce into.  So, two things, each funneling into the other.  Don't know if that makes sense, or even if it is a wise thing to do.

And a Happy Valentine's Day to you, Mother Banana.

Andrea in #28:  Last Sunday was the real Birthday.  I would never post my "real" birthday on places like Facebook.  I enjoy my anonymity too much.

I looked at your Slice of New Milford.  Great Title.  And yes, I have looked at Atahualpa, as well.  It can be fun building something like that.  I love learning stuff.  Hopefully, if I get that far, things will also be "self explanatory."  I'm not counting on it, though.

As far as "hitting Google..." I have found both Google and YouTube to be... to a great degree... often very outdated, and often hard to understand.  I think this link that I put in the post... that I just happened to stumble upon... could be a great source of learning... at least for me.

I think anything having to do with stuff like WordPress... that the learning of it is most definitely an evolving process.  As am I... <dorky smile>  Some days I think I am de-volving, I fear.

Karen in #29:  I looked at your Fiddler Realty Team site... at and like it quite a bit.  Is that the WordPress site.  It did not have the usual mention of WordPress at the bottom.  Also... it figures you would have it... but I loved the Phil Jackson quote.  Very, very true.

Also... you have a Blogger blog titled Southern California real Estate... on Blogger... that it appears you have forgotten about.  I think that is a great "second" site... and honestly, since it is already up and running... I would make much greater use of it... but still keep it, in addition to any other stuff you have.  It is great... in it's simplicity.

I think it is a great place for that "Only answer questions one time" stuff that Bob or Jon has promoted.

Melissa in #30:  Thanks so much for your Birthday Wishes, and your kind words.

Heck... I have been intimidated by WordPress for perhaps a year or two.  But, if I had blindly waded into it then, like I ma doing recently, I would be soooo much further along than I am now.  So... perhaps wait just a tad longer, and when I get more of an handle on it, I will share what I know with you.  Glad to do it.  It's that "teacher thing" again.

Is a WordPress site worth the time ?  I think so.  You never know what might happen to Active Rain.  And, if it disappears, or gets crazy on us, remember... it's all theirs... and they have control.

Is it worth the money investment.  Well, for the most part, WordPress is either free... if you go the route, or only modestly expensive if you go the route.  I will keep you informed as to that... once I get "up and going."

And... if you have already written blog posts for your Active Rain blog, why not just additionally move them over to a WordPress site, and let it start bubbling ?

As far as the domain names... I am guessing the fee for each of them is modest, so if the name works for you, keep on paying for it.  And... if you use it, cool.  But at least, if you don't use it, nobody else who might be your competition can.

By the way... I will have to email you and tell you how great I thought your post about the Democratic Convention coming to Charlotte was.  I have lots to share.  <dorky but mysterious smile>

Karen,  I can't compare Thesis with Genesis, since I have no experience with the latter.  I did put my site together myself, with lots of technical help from Debra Davis.  I was able to pick her brain because she had gone through the process quite awhile before I did.  I'm one of those crazies who loves to find out how things work, then test the limits of that knowledge.  All of that said, I'm still a babe in the woods when it comes to Wordpress.

Kate in #54:  Most folks on Active Rain know NONE of this stuff.  Or very little.  I have been here over three years, and there are still things on Active Rain I discover that are new to me.  And... I have registered a domain name, and have a site to host it, and still have no clue how to get it up and running.

And this little bit of HTML I just learned that I mentioned in this post... sheesh... I am working with an old, worn-out brain here.  It takes me a while, a long while, to learn this new stuff, but once I learn it, I feel I can teach it to anyone.  And I can teach it in a way that works a lot better than the way I learned it, myself.  Very frustrating.

Heck, I don't even know how to put a "subscribe to my blog" button in the bottom end of each of my posts.  Pretty sharp, huh ?

Hi Karen!!!!  Happy Belated Birthday!  If you really are 67, that tells me that I have no excuse for not trying to keep up with technology myself.  As my worldly travels are hopefully starting to wind down, I'm trying madly to catch up on the technology.  I just created my first WordPress blog over the weekend in hopes that it will be a good venue to blog about random stuff that I can then feed to Facebook and in turn keep my family happy.  I'll have to keep a watch on your posts to see what you are learning about Wordpress.

By the way, how is your kitty?

Sondra:  Yes, I really AM 67.  Just seeing those two numbers... the 6 and the 7... makes me want to go take a nap.

This technology stuff makes me nutz.  It is so hard to get it into my brain... takes so long.  And I get tired easier than I used to.

So, is your WordPress blog up and running ?  I would love to see it.  I have two WordPress "personal" blogs up... that I am using for "random stuff" as you put it... and also using them to try and learn WordPress.  The are MyOlderSister's Blog and Nice Catholic Girl from Cleveland.  Of course, nobody looks at it.  It takes forever to get any traffic... but then again, I really don't care if it does or not.  I'd like your opinions, if you would.

Mollie T Cat sends her best to you.  She is well, and as silly as ever.  She still loves taking actually SHOWERS in the tub... and getting drenched.  Yeah... it's true.  Hope you are well, my dear.  And really, I have missed seeing you.  Take care... be well.

For some reason or other I just found this post, Karen Anne. Great info; I have a WP too but don't get much traffic on it. Happy belated birthday.

Hi Karen Anne,

If you are working in the free .com and feel comfy, then you will feel comfy in the .org realm. They are so similar and if you are going to put so much time into learning, you should jump in and learn the one that will get you the most bang for the time.

I am so glad that you started this post. I have been looking at the sites people are posting and they are gorgeous! Makes me feel a little lazy in the design part of it.

I started my wordpress blog last June and right off made a commitment to get 60 posts in by the end of the year. I also decided to focus on Neighborhoods in my area and it forced me to get out and collect pictures and info and see more homes in 6 months than the previous 4 years. and I am using the press play theme, which I am using right out of the box. I love it. Clean and simple and user friendly.

After 8 months I am finally getting some calls and emails on my site, about 2 per week the last month or so. Between AR articles and WP, I may get a sale yet this year...

If you are considering a jump into the WP .org site and need some free hand holding let me know. I have been teaching people in my office and we are having a blast. I would love the opportunity to share with you.

Good luck and Happy Belated Birthday! Sorry I saw this so late.

Thanks for posting this -- I have been wondering about this very topic.  I have noticed that several members have more than one blog and was wondering how that worked.  Are both blogs completely different content from each other, etc.   I've hear the WordPress system is a little challenging, or maybe it's just that they don't have the tutorials that AR has.

Karen, I tried a wordpress site too. I actually think I have a few, but also got frustrated with setting it up.  I'm bookmarking this so I can come back and review the forum.  Thanks!
