Lady Gaga Commits to Overturning DADT

These are very strange times we are living in... for oh so many reasons.

A great travesty has been a part of our national landscape for about fifteen years, now.  It concerns the refusal to acknowledge equal rights and equal treatment for a group of American citizens... who are also members of the United States Armed Services.

The travesty is the refusal of the Armed Services, and of the National Government as well, to apply the same laws to ALL members of the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Air Force, and the Coast Guard.

That policy is sometimes referred to as DADT... which stands for Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Members of the above Armed Forces are being discriminated against... because the DADT law applies to them, and has singled them out.

Who has recently mounted a campaign to try and succeed... where gay rights advocates in Washington so far have failed?

Why... it is a woman named Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta... better known as Lady Gaga.

Here is Ms Germanotta, Lady Gaga... to tell you in her own words.

Ms Germanotta is spearheading a campaign to free our Armed Services members from the shackles of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.  For some reason she, and her 6,300,000 followers on Twitter, want the discrimination of DADT to stop.  It appears that Ms Germanotta actually believes in the freedoms granted by the United States Constitution.  How totally brilliant of her.

Funny how they think that to grant one group of Soldiers the freedom to be themselves, and to refuse that same right... to another group of Service Men and Service Women... is an honest and fair interpretation of the Constitution... is just plain nutz.

If you are an American, and I mean a true American, and IF you believe in the United States Constitution... and its guarantee of equal treatment for ALL of its citizens... and not special treatment for a specific group... please add your support to Lady Gaga's campaign to stop the unfair treatment the DADT regulation enforces.

Karen.. These military troops are our family.  They serve this country, and deserve our appreciation for same.  WHO CARES WHAT THEIR SEXUAL PREFERENCE is.  God Bless Lady Gaga.

Thank you for posting this Karen.

Hello Karen and the Government has been crushing our rights threw the constitution over and over, I think it's very sad. VB use to study the Constitution within small groups years ago and it was very interesting, they mentioned within the groups all the different ways that our rights are being taken away from us every day!

Your post has been featured at one of my favorite groups ...

An American is an American. And if an American wants to serve our country in the most courageous and honorable way possible, then why should anyone say "No"? Good for Lady Gaga!

I know very little of Lady Gaga, being so detached from pop culture.  However, love that she's out there helping to overturn this DADT way of doing things.

Thank you for posting this and Thank You to Lady Gaga!  DADT is an embarrassment and disgrace to our entire nation, made even more ridiculous and counterproductive during a time of war.  We've been trying to reach our Senators and will continue tomorrow.  At least one of ours gave an inkling that she might support repeal, but also a practiced and safe answer touting the "need" for further study.

As one who was raised in a military family, I am disgusted that this unconstitutional law has remained in place with the current lame excuse of "further study" and needing to plan a transition.  WHAT transition!  LGBT service members are already serving honorably and will continue to do so the very day DADT is repealed.  To even consider for a moment that their behavior as soldiers will change if/when this is repealed is simply absurd.

I'll stop soon, but just want to also say that ALL Americans should be livid that our government has been harming our national security and the safety of our soldiers by systematically removing highly qualified, competent, and essential personnel based solely on a personal attribute that is entirely irrelevant to their service.  Sorry for the length here, but I won't be putting my soapbox away until after the vote.  :)

Thank you Lady GaGa - and thank you Karen Anne for posting this. DADT is ridiculous...always has been - always will be. Sometimes you need someone with a big megaphone for this - Lady GaGa's got what it takes....Kind of like Jon Stewarts "rally for sanity" in politics.. He now has a big voice and feels an obligation to do the right thing.

Chris Ann:  Up until today... and until seeing this video, I knew just about nothing about Lady Gaga, either.  But now I know that her name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta.  And I know she has a brain, and a very empathetic heart.  I will definitely admit that after seeing her video, I think of her in a completely different light.

And, of course, I am now going to totally change the way I wear my makeup... and do it Lady-Gaga Style... especially to church-lady functions and MLS meetings... LOL.  Honestly, I would SO enjoy going to one of the more conservative Catholic parish evangelistic "doings"... with my make-up that way.  What a trip.  Hopefully, I can find someone else to go with me... who will video the whole thing.  See... always thinkin' about the next post.

Valerie:  You are very welcome.  Number one... as you said... Who cares what their sexual preference is ?  And may both God and Goddess bless Lady Gaga, and all of our Service Men and Women.  And two... So many excellent members of our Armed Forces have been exiled from the Service, and they did NOT want to leave.

Their talents were very sorely needed.  I have heard of tens and tens of gay and lesbian soldiers... who spoke FLUENT Farsi (Iran), and many FLUENT Pakistani and Afghani tribal dialects... who were thrown out of the service.

These people with these CRITICAL talents... jeez... who knows how many lives have been lost, because of the inability of the Troops over there to understand the local languages and dialects... simply because this stupid rule caused/dictated the removal of our OWN language experts... simply because they were lesbian or gay.  What a criminal shame.  Quel Batards !  (french speakers... was that correct ?  If not, please advise)

Vegas Bob:  I am not one to go overboard like some of those "out there" as far as claiming that the Government blatantly disregards an extensive amount of Constitutional rights.  But... when equal rights are prevented... like that horrible mistake of a Proposition 8 in California, I DO think it is ridiculous.

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) about 8 years ago

Judy:  I wholeheartedly agree.  Other countries extend equal treatment to ALL of the members of its Armed Forces... and have NOT had any problems with it whatsoever.  If someone honors our country, and has the courage to join... as you said, why should anyone say "No?"

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) about 8 years ago

Richard:  Thanks for your kind words.  Free speech and equal treatment under the law... under the Constitution.  Natalie Maines had it right !  And so does Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta.

Kristen:  You are very welcome.  After seeing this video today... I could not NOT post it.  At least Ms Collins and Ms Snowe occasionally have the guts to break out of lock-step with Mitch McConnell.  Sheesh... and people make fun of Harry Reid.  Wow.

There is absolutely NO need for further study.  If anyone needs any further study, let them re-read the Constitution.  Especially the part mentioning equal rights and equal treatment.  And no, there is no need whatsoever for a "transition."  Transition to, or transition from WHAT ?

Kristen... never worry about cutting your comments short.  Please.  To stop short, for you, causes me, and all the commentors... from benefiting from your wisdom... and I mean that sincerely.  Multiple comments are great, as well.  You know that.  On the last post... you and I just started to go for our own lil walk, there... and although I was enjoying it, I wanted to get back on track.  So please... talk on.

Please keep your soapbox out, and if you wish, put in some special wiring around it, so you have power for both a loudspeaker, and some mini-spotlights.  Almost not kidding here.  I see you're on a roll... and, affording equal treatment to all... if you were of the Jewish persuasion... I'd say you were on a bagel.  How's that for being fair ?

Ruthmarie:  You are very welcome.  As I said above... after seeing Stefani Joanne's post (Lady Gaga) how could I NOT post this.

As far as Jon Stewart is concerned... what would be so great... would be if some Gazillionaire with endless funds, would buy a cable channel... and put Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Al Franken, Bill Maher, and several other Progressive Liberals on their own channel... and have it dedicated to combatting the baloney that Fox Snooze vomits out on a daily, or rather hourly basis.

Who else could we put on the network ?  Any ideas.  Also... do you know any Gazillionaires who want to purchase a cable channel ?  Believe it or not... DFW has THREE full right-wing AM radio stations, and one FM one, that are just 24 hours of Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage, Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson, Neal Boortz, Mark Davis, Michelle Bachmann, Michelle Malkin, Dennis Miller, Mark Levin and the rest of the cretins.  It is just plain bizarre.

On a bagel...I like that!  I don't know how wise I am, more of an odd combo of open and stubborn, but thank you.  I like the wiring idea.  I'll have to look in to that. :)  Anyone else up for trying to go to the Rally for Sanity?

Posted by Kristen Wheatley, Supporting Success - Best Job in the World! (Better Homes & Gardens | The Masiello Group) about 8 years ago

Kristen:  I bet going to that Rally for Sanity would be a pretty cool experience.  It is really funny, but the people here... are pretty decent.  Never have a problem with them, and I have been known to let my views known... and probably at times when it might have been "suggested" that it was not a good time or place to do that.  But, who listens ?

Are you really considering going ?  And... whatever you want to call your "opinions..." I like your style.  Open and stubborn... that works for me.  Odd combo, huh ?

I remember in grade school when I'd come home, all sad, and complain to Mom that the other kids were calling me "weird."  She would hug me, and then tell me that it was ok... and that "weird" was just another word for "special."  And yikes... am I special, or what ?

I love Lady Gaga....there is just something special about her, which probably explains her fame.  Thanks for this great post.  What a crazy world that we live in.

Kate:  Up until I saw this video today... I kind of ignored Lady Gaga.  With a name like that... whooda thunk ?  But, that is EXACTLY what I get for making an assumption based on her NAME.

Now... after reading several stories about her, and this video... I have gained much respect for here.

Heck... I even watched a Lady Gaga Make-up tutorial about her... on YouTube.  I am not sure even I can imagine what I would look like with Lady Gaga make-up.  But hey, I am just silly enough to try it.  <silly smile>

It's not all about makeup, Karen Anne. You have to find the wig, too!

It always takes someone famous to get the point across. I like her and I'm glad she's taking a stand against DADT!

Karen Ann, I - like you - never really paid much mind to Lady GAGA before; this video of her fighting against DADT is definitely an eye opener.  Much respect gained now!

As someone who was at the 15 year point of a 20 year mililitary career at the time DADT was instituted, my thoughts at the time were it was a step in the right direction.  I thought the INTENTION was to eliminate the witch hunts that were taking place at the time.  Looking back, I can see that it probably didn't help much - if at all - and has absolutely become a point for "differentiation" and, therefore, discrimination.  And so....it's time to get rid of DADT!

Judy:  You are one silly goose !  Yes... of course, I need Lady Gaga's make-up style... so I am in "training... ."  See my Clinique Make-Over post.  But... do I need a wig ?  Are you serious?  This is DALLAS, Texas.  It's BIG HAIR Country.

Remember Ladybird Johnson.  Lots of hair.  In Texas... the old saying of "Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow" is not valid.  Big Hair will always be here.  When I bought my current car, my Honda CR-V in 2007... one of the critical requirements was having enough interior head-room... so my HAIR would fit, and not get squished.

When I lived in Cleveland, Big Hair was "In" there as well.  Except we didn't "tease" our hair... we "ratted" it.  I think that is where the beautician's term "rat tail comb" came from.

Actually... down here in "big hair" country... they ought to call it "interior hair room" instead of "interior head room."

Great video. I had not seen it yet.  I knew that she was getting behind the movement though.

Lady GaGa never ceases to amaze. I had the pleasure of attending her concert last month and I can see why everyone show is sold out, why she has more followers on Twitter than anyone else and why people shut up when she talks.

Hey, I just found out that Lady Gaga is coming here to Maine tomorrow for a rally at Deering Oaks Park in Portland!  The Service Member's Legal Defense Network is holding the rally at 4pm to try to sway out two Senators to support repeal of DADT Tuesday.

As luck would have it, I will be in that area tomorrow at around that time!  We are going to a "Not Back To School" potluck at the Portland Headlight from 1-4 for the Maine Unschooling Network.  I'll try to get photos!  I'll bet a bunch of my fellow unschoolers will want to go as well.  Maybe we can get a huge crowd going.  I have a feeling Lady Gaga draws a huge crowd wherever she goes.

It seems she stayed in the same hotel as I this weekend in Charlotte. There was a lot of traffic and events thanks to her. She is VERY popular. It is wonderful that she is standing up for ALL Americans who serve in the Military.

Hi Karen Anne... with these sort of leadership skills, perhaps Ms. Germanotta's talent as singer will keep her in the spotlight and help propel her to larger leadership roles and offices in society.  I, for one, certainly hope so!
