Have you Ever Thought your Post "Laid An Egg ?"

Well... it finally happened.  I thought I "laid an egg."  I thought I "wrote a bomb."  How else could I phrase it ?  Let's see.

Ummm... I thought I "lost my touch."  I thought I forgot how to write ?  I am guessing that this has been something many of us Active Rainers have experienced from time to time.

Anyhoo... back to my story.  Last night, as I was watching the Delaware Primary Election returns on cable... turning back and forth between MSNBC and FOX... I wrote what I thought was a pretty decent post...

I put forth quite a bit of effort... checking all my facts, getting out my Canon Rebel XTi camera and taking about twenty pictures... right off the television screen... to make sure I had a good one for the post I was writing.

So... I tweaked the post... hit "Post Blog Entry"... took a look at it... went back into "edit" mode, made a change or two, re-worded some awkward grammar phrasings, hit spell-check, did my own second "proof-read"... and then hit "Post Blog Entry" again.

I felt it was a decent post.  Felt it should stimulate some good conversation.  I had not written a political post in a long time.  I had been trying to "get away from them."  Much too much "fighting" went on in the comments, and honestly, I was simply tired of all the grief.

So, I hit submit, I got into my jammies, told Mollie T Cat it was bedtime, and "off we went" to dream land... feeling pretty good about writing what I thought was a decent post.

Then... came this morning.  I got up, hit the "brew" button on the coffee maker..., made some toast, turned on the computer, and hit the "My Blog" button to "see all the wonderful comments" that I just KNEW had been made on my "Delaware Primary" post.

There were ZERO comments.  Nothing.  Nada.  The comment cupboard was bare.

Ouch !  What happened ?  So, into my "detective" mode I went.  Opened the post, went into edit, then submitted again, looked at the comments.  Nuttin' Honey !

So... my mind started to melt.  No comments.  Nobody loves me any more.  My Active Rain life as I have known it... is OVER.  I thought... maybe I should try Tweeting.  (never... that was just me trying to be funny)

Wow... how could that happen ?

Has it ever happened to you... Bloggers and Blog-ettes ?  You wrote what you thought was a good post.  A "decent" post.  You took your time, tried to make it a good post.  Checked everything... and then... It Bombed ?

Ummm... I thought I "lost my touch."  I thought I forgot how to write ?  And, I am guessing that this has been something many of us Active Rainers have experienced from time to time.

Has it ever happened to you ?  If so... what was your reaction ?  How did it make you FEEL ?  "Touchy-feely" me is curious.

Have you ever thought your post totally "laid an egg ?"

Karen Anne,  Oh how I identify!  Seems like the posts I spend the most time with get the least attention and quite hurts.  Then I throw some tidbit together, hit "post" and it gets featured and comments like you wouldn't believe.  However, I've decided some of it is timing.  Seems like early morning posts get the most attention, but I don't know. Keep writing and so will I.

Now I'm off to check out that political post of yours.

Posted by Marian Goetzinger, Crystal Coast Real Estate NC (Pine Knoll Shores Realty 252-422-9000) over 10 years ago

Karen Anne - I think that it's easy to feel this way when you are writing againt 190,000 other bloggers in a channel and you only maintain a handful of comments on any given post you write. :) All I can do is keep writing and I must say that I found your blog this morning intriguing and interesting so please don't feel like you've lost your touch. You are a wonderful writer.

Comments a blog post do not make, Karen Anne.  Now that I've got my best Yoda inpersonation out of the way, by that I mean that just because nobody comments, doesn't mean that it wasn't good or that nobody was reading.

On AR, we've grown used to getting comments because their so easy to come by.  Many blog sites wait months or years before they get their first comment on any post they've made.  It doesn't mean that nobody has read it, though.

Still, I understand how you feel.  I recently wrote a post about creating discussions or just sounding off.  If you're trying to create a discussion with your post and nobody shows up, it's pretty disheartening.

It does happen.  I have had several of those myself.  You also have others that you don't think might get many comments, but then do for some reason.

Dearest Karen Anne- ouch!  I feel your pain, too.  I have been featured once, only to follow it up with a "stinker".  I just keep plugging along and hope that people respond.  It's like the blog equivalent of introducing yourself to someone and holding out your hand to shake and they just look at your hand and say nothing.

I agree with Marian-it is hard to get noticed when there are so many people blogging in the rain.  But I am a loyal subscriber and I visit whenever you have new post!  :)

Check out your statistics page and see how many people read your post.  Might be that they read it but didn't commnet.  This happens and doesn't mean you laid an egg!

There are a LOT of posts every day, Karen Ann, I'm subscribed to almost 100 bloggers here and I'm having a real hard time keeping up with everyone. It may be the 30 day challenge going on, its become blogging on steroids.

Karen:  Patience my dear.  Patience.  The primary results were only "in" as of 9 p.m. or so last night.  Give us a chance!!  Some mornings I have to hit the floor running.  I WILL get to reading that post .. as I'm sure I will LOVE it ... but .. whew!  Patience beautiful Karen!

And as far as my "stinker" posts ... I carry that fear with me daily ...

Gene:  Thank you so much for your kind comment... and for your referring to me as "beautiful Karen."

I have set an appointment for you with my Optometrist to have your vision checked, and then an additional visit with my Ophthalmologist to see if you might have any serious eye damage, like a detached retina or something.

Please, if your vision is failing, call the helpful folks at the local "seeing eye dog" place.  I am sure they will be more than willing to help.  <crinkly smile>

Marian:  I guess I must be spoiled.  I usually get comments.  And yes, I know exactly how you must feel... and finally, another yes... when you go through all that work, and get nothing.  It does hurt.  But just as my "thin skin" allows my empathy to work, it also lets in the little stings that most folks brush off.

And sure, much of it is timing.  So yes... let's make a deal... you keep writing, and so will I.  Huggs to you... and, just for fun, stick your tongue out at Amy for me.  <smile>

Lindsay:  Yes... there definitely ARE over 190,000 other Active Rainers out there.  But you and I both know that so few of them are writing posts.

I am fortunate to have folks like you reading my posts, and commenting.  I appreciate you.  You know that.  And yes, like Marian above, you keep writing, Marian will, and I will as well.  Bless your heart for your kind comment.  Take care...

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) over 10 years ago

Oh Roger:  You know what I mean.  Of course comments a post do not make.  But, we all, from somewhere inside, must be looking for some sort of "validation."  If we don't find ourselves doing that, at least very occasionally, we may not be human.

And yes... if we are writing on some outside blog, like the two that I have on WordPress... they almost NEVER get any comments.  Prolly because they almost never have anyone read them, I am guessing... LOL.

Uh huh... trying to write a post to create a discussion, and nobody shows up... yes, it can be very disheartening.  So... LOL... thanks for commenting.  <dorky smile>

Rodney:  I know all about writing something that I this is just... well... just a post.  And then, next time I look, it has a Gold Star, and fifty comments.  There is just no way to figure this stuff out.  I know... I have frustrated myself trying to do it.

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) over 10 years ago

Karen, I feel your pain.  Until relatively recently, many of my more memorable posts, the ones I put my heart and soul into, sank like a stone into the deep waters of ActiveRain just moments after I clicked "submit blog entry."  It was sobering to say the least, causing me to wonder at last if I had cyber b.o. or wrote behind an invisible shield.  It did hurt.  It made me question why I was continuing to invest so much of myself for so little return.  Then I reminded myself why I was doing it in the first place, and I stopped hoping for some acknowledgment.  Strangely enough, months after I stopped looking, i did develop a small circle of followers.

BTW, just for the record, I did stop by and read your post.  Loved the way it was written, but political commentary, for the most part, is just not my thing, so I didn't comment.

Jennifer:  Oh, I like the way you started out your comment.  Love those verbal huggs.

Yes, feel my pain, and I feel yours.  Wow... what an awkward feeling.  Meeting someone, and you extending your hand to them to "shake hands"... and have them look at your outstretched hand as if you were a total dork.  Dubble Ouch.

Marian is a good one to agree with.  Marian is cool.  And... Marian spells her name just like my Mom did.  Sure, it can be rough to not only be noticed, but to be appreciated... when there are so many others.  That is why when I find someone who I like, and who appreciates me, I take notice.  And those, are the ones I usually add... "as an Associate."

I appreciate your being a loyal subscriber.  And yes... I am now... an ECO-Broker.  I loved that !

Wendy:  I have on occasion gone to the statistics page, and checked out  how many looks and clicks I have had... but no comments.  Sometimes it makes it worse.

But also... I have made a better use of the statistics page.  Instead of going to the individual months under the "Archives" on the right hand side, I have used the "statistics" chart to scroll down through my previous posts... when I am looking for a post I wrote in the past.  Much better than clicking on month after month after month.

Yupperooney!  I've laid a bunch, but not you!  You just have to give some of us more time.  I hadn't even seen it yet.  I stopped commenting in the morning since my brain doesn't seem to function properly until enough java has been pumped in.

Cynthia:  Yes... lots of posts everyday, and lots of subscribers to keep track of.  Add to that trying to watch the daily on-going general blog roll for good Newbies, too... it just can get to feel overwhelming.

And... the 30 day challenge... this post is my "Day 19" post.  Eleven to go.  <smile>  But actually, I have found one a day to be much easier, and with much LESS pressure, than having ideas just "sit there"... and then some several days later, trying to figure out just why my scribbly note to myself was so important... a few days before.

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) over 10 years ago

Geri:  That is just awesome.  Cyber B. O.  And dubble Ouch !  Writing a post, and having it sink like a stone.  I am sure, at least for you, and the awesome writing talent YOU have... to have it drop like a rock... never to be heard from again... can most definitely be sobering and disheartening.

As far as questioning investing so much for so little return, Geri... remember... this is all "cumulative."  Consistency does it.  Do you ever watch "The Today Show ?"  There is a reason they don't call it "The Every Other Day Show..." or "The Today-If-We-Feel-Up-To-It" Show.

I have found that it has to get to the point where you attract people because of both the quality of your writing, and the dependability of how often you write.  Just remember... if you write it... they will read.  Hmmm... sounds like a good title for a book or a movie.  <dorky smile>  Better call Tom Hanks.

And... thanks for at least stopping by my political post.  I had not written one in a long time.  I got bruised much too often... so I stopped the political stuff.  What a "chicken" I was.

And... once again... love that "cyber bo" comment.  Just excellent... said Ms Stone, as she held out her hand... and offered some Cyber Deodorant, and her "Chanel Allure" perfume to the lovely Ms Sonkin.  <smile x 2>

Karen, I have had the experience too many times to count.  Usually it doesn't bug me unless it was a post that I was really excited about & figured it would touch a spot for readers.  Then when there aren't any comments it is really disappointing.

Kristen:  How cool is this !  I have learned a new word today... Yupperooney !  I like it.

Well, with you layiing eggs, and me laying eggs... let's have an omelet for breakfast.  I'd like mine with cheese and tomatoes, if you please.

I guess ya just gotta be there.  I was thinking I had written a decent post... and often... when I put it into the "Late Night" group... I have even received comments at three or four in the morning.  So... my hopes were up... only to be "dashed against the rocks."  Oh, the pain of it all... <silly smile>

And yes... I had to get my first cup of coffee... (that picture of the coffeemaker IS the one in my kitchen, by the way)... before I could open up my Active Rain blog.

I don't know if I can even remember the last time my brain functioned properly... but at least the coffee points it in that direction.  Hugglets, my dear.

You've got SUCH great blogs.  I've written some myself quite thoughtfully, and then some just plain neighborhood informational, and gotten more comments on those.  I don't think I've built up my readership all that much yet, and I try not to get personally attached to what I write. (well I TRY) I also don't express strong opinions about stuff - so I'm pretty  wallflowerish, although I try not to lurk too much. I also try not to get personally attached to whether or not someone might respond (or not) to a comment I spent some time compiling. I guess you can call me eggs over-EASY....

Marie-Denise in # 40:  I looked at your blog and your posts just now, and you really write very well.  You SHOULD be getting more comments.  I looked at some of the posts closely, and saw that you do not usually list the posts in the maximum of FIVE Active Rain Groups.  You are much too invisible... and need to have more folks read your posts.  That will really help as far as comments are concerned.

Here is a tutorial post that I wrote recently about the Active Rain Groups feature.  ** Want More Comments ? Using the Active Rain "Groups Feature" Will Really Help !  I really think that after you read this... you will see the value in always including your post in five of the Active Rain groups.  Hope this helps, and if more questions, please ask.  Okay ?  <smile>

Also... I might suggest that you Subscribe to my blog, and also I invite you to Add me as an Associate.  Just a suggestion.

Take care...
