I Had to Sneak Into Borders to Do It...

Yes... there I was.  At Borders Books... kind of slinking along through the door... hoping nobody would notice.  Last night I read a post that was sort of a review of Laura Bush's book... and the review actually made the book look like something I might want to take a look at.

But... my reputation was at stake, here.  Being the Texas Progressive that I am... and not having voted for a Republican since 1968 when I (gulp) voted for Richard Milhous Nixon (cuz I was angry at Hubert Humphrey).

I mean... what if someone who KNEW me... SAW me ?  My life as I knew it... would be over.

Sooo... in I snuck.  Stealthily avoiding any eye contact whatsoever.  Although I miss my parents incredibly much, in a weird way it was fortunate that they had passed away over twenty years ago... so they could in no way be there... in Borders... to see me holding that book.  They would not be pleased.

I was... actually "considering" buying a book written by a Republican.  Oy !

Again... once inside... I tried to look nonchalant.  Just kinda browsing, thank you.  But then... there it was.  Laura's book.  But... as I was reaching out to dare to touch it... (I had to 'touch' it to pick it up...) something else caught my eye.

It was another book.  Another political book.  This one... was by Meghan McCain.  Yes... THAT Meghan McCain.  Johnny Mac's daughter.  Meghan McCain... the "maverick's Maverick."

Ya see... Ms McCain IS a rebel, or at least, she appears to be.  She actually thinks some of her Republican brether'en and sister'en have gone too far.  Meghan even believes in equal rights for gays and lesbians, and also believes they have the constitutional right to marry if they so choose.  Yikes... this woman is a Republican?

Well... all of a sudden, my hand "jerked away" from it's out-stretched reach towards Laura Bush's book... and very daintily picked up Meghan McCain's book.  It was entitled Dirty Sexy Politics.

About six months ago... prolly longer ago than that, actually... Ms McCain appeared on the David Letterman show.  Dave was "in a mood..." and gave Ms McCain a "good, incisive interview."  I actually remember being impressed with how well Ms McCain handled herself with Dave.

So... I did the only thing I could to save face, and also satisfy my curiosity.  After quickly scanning the book, and the jacket liner notes... I bought the book.  Meghan's book, not Laura's.  It was on sale for 30% off.  And, I had a special Border's card... when upped my discount to 40%... and then another card that gave me an additional 10% discount.  Sheesh... poor Borders was close to paying ME to buy the book... so I did.

As soon as I read it... I will again return to my blog and post a review.  But... until then... please... puhleeze... do not tell ANY of my friends... that I bought a book written by a... gulp... Republican.

Karen, you make me laugh!  So I'm confused now, which book did you buy, Dirty Sexy Politics, or Laura's book? Or did you splurge and buy both?  :)

Ah, but open minded, forward thinking progressive liberals such as yourself are OPEN to reading the thoughts of the other side.

It is the dogmatic, rigid, fascist right wingers who wouldn't be caught dead with a Michael Moore piece in their shelf.

Unless, of course, the right of center person is ME, but I like to break the mold, and I am only a fiscal conservative. .

So, you say you are a moldy fiscal conservative ?  But I hope you are a social Progressive... right ?  Yep... them "righties"... ya gotta watch'em all the time.  <smile>  So yes, I will see what this Republican Meghan McCain is about.  And yes, I did buy her book.

But hey... I said I voted for a Republican once.  Forty-two years ago.  What was I thinking ?

Karen Anne - I meant that YOU and your story of buying her book would be a great marketing commerical for buying her book.  Think about this - A lady goes to Borders and start to reach for the Laura book - looking around that no one is watching - then she sees the Meghan book etc. etc.  I think that is funny.

Joan in # 9:  Sorry I skipped over you.  :(  I am glad you liked the post.  That is good news.  And, from what I remember from the David Letterman interview of Ms McCain, I am sure I will enjoy the book.  She IS somewhat of a "maverick"... just not the Palin brand... thank Goddess.

Also... I actually LIKE Laura Bush.  She is actually much different than many folks would think.  And... as far as I know... she is very much FOR equal rights for gays and lesbians... and in favor of their constitutional right to marry.

Buying her book was the reason I drove over to Borders this afternoon in the first place.  But... Laura's book is HUGE.  Prolly about 500 pages.  But, I will prolly buy it later.  I am really interested in seeing just what kind of woman it took to stay married to someone like her husband... George W.

Hi Karen Anne!  Thanks for the laugh this morning!  You're a trip!

I'm going off on a tangent here but, since you know me, you'll understand, I'm sure!  I have to confess--I am, I guess, what you would call a moderate (fiscally conservative, socially liberal) and since 1976 (when I could first vote) I have never pulled that 'straight ticket' lever!  There has never been a line-up on either side of the line that had 100% of their candidates impress me--muchless could I agree with all of either party's full team!  I don't vote because the candidate is republican or democrat, I vote for whomever has the best platform.  I have to say, the last several years, it's been increasingly difficult to find one on EITHER side that I want to vote for--and I don't see any relief on the November horizon either!  Arrgh!

Have a great week...

Debe in # 30:  Tangents are fully acceptable, and only add to the fun.  MOST tangents, that is.

I understand about never voting a "straight ticket."  I never have, either.  And, if there was someone I really felt good about, and had confidence in, I might vote for them... even though they might be of the Republican persuasion.

I am also a moderate... a fiscal conservative and a social liberal.  BUT... for me, not only is the individual CANDIDATE important, the folks in the party behind him or her can be even MORE important.

For example... let's go to 2012.  I am not thrilled about how President Obama has been doing.  He "scatter shoots" when he should be focusing on the economy.  I so wish Hillary had won in 2008.  I voted for her, and campaigned for her as well.

So... if in 2012... it was a choice between Obama and let's say... Haley Barbour of Mississippi or John Boehner, Republican congressman from Ohio... and President Obama... I would definitely vote for Obama.  Actually, I hope he "retires" to "spend more time with his family" and Hillary runs.  Wow !

But... let's juice it up a bit.  If, let's say, Colin Powell stays a Republican, and runs for President in 2012.  I very much respect him, and am so angry that he had to make that speech in front of the UN many years ago... justifying the invasion of Iraq... when Cheney and friends LIED to him about Saddam's WMD.  But, I digress.

If Powell were running against... say... Obama again... I just might prefer Colin Powell personally over Obama.  But... here is the major problem.

IF I voted for Colin Powell... look at the horrid mob of cretins that comes in with him.  Cheney, Romney, John Kyle, Haley Barbour, that jerk Senator Tom Coburn from Oklahoma, our idiot Governor Perry from Texas, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck, former Senator Rick Santorum from Pennsylvania (who would trash women's rights), Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, and guys like Karl Rove (who should be in prison.)  And, don't forget... we get all those far-right religious conservatives from California, as well... with a Republican president... even IF it is someone like Colin Powell.

It scares the poop out of me that those same guys who wrought so much ruin on our country from 2000 to 2008... would have free rein and free reign again.

So yes... I DO consider very much the candidate him or her self, but ALSO... and probably even more importantly, those who would come into the government on that candidate's coat-tails.

Does this make sense ?  And... how is THAT... for a "tangent ?"

By the way... I see you have another new picture.  Very, very nice.  What a "foxy lady" you are... <smile>

I hope this does not turn this fun post into a political one.  I think we're having too much fun here to ruin it.

Debe in # 32:  First of all... see what YOU started ?  LOL.

Now... yes, I think I will enjoy Meghan McCain's book.  Actually, from here stint on Letterman, I already know she is not "her Father's conservative."  Reading her book will tell me just how much... she has grown away from some of her father's conservative views... although often, John McCain is not all that bad.

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) about 8 years ago

Gayla in # 33:  I think Glenn Beck is either totally crazy... and needs to be heavily medicated... or he is extremely clever, and is "putting one over" all those tea-sippers who are glued to the set when he is on.

I have hear some things from Laura Bush that I am guessing would make some of the further-right folks cringe.  I am positive that she is FOR equal constitutional marital rights for lesbians and gays... as am I.  I respect her, and, although her book is very long, I will take a much closer look at it the next time I am at Borders... only this time, I will try and wear some sort of a disguise... hopefully.

Very cute post.  I have seen Meghan McCain interviewed and while I may not agree with all she says she is an article and intelligent young lady.  Enjoy the book.

Miriam in # 37:  I am sure I will enjoy it... if only to learn more about her so i can more knowledgeably address her viewpoints.  I am sure she will have ideas I agree with, and ones I do not.  I only know some of her "platform..."... and when I am through, I will write another post about her book and her philosophy, and give it my "fair and balanced" review... <smile>

Yes,,, from what I have seen, she is quite articulate, and quite intelligent, as well.  Right now I just don't know enough about her to form a firm judgment.  Right now, I feel I know that she is "more progressive" than her father... but that may not be enough.

Cute puppy in the picture, Miriam.  What's her name ?

I haven't read her book yet. I did read Laura's and loved it, especially her upbringing and the years after 9-11. I also had no idea how much she did for Afghan women as the media never covered it.

I also read Roslyn Carters book. I am non partisian when it comes to reading these books as you glean so much out of "their story".

The media is full of sound bites and they leave out so much of who the person is.

And Karen Anne, I agree with you about Colin Powell, but he says he won't consider running (could he change his mind?)  And I hope Hillary runs with Obama next time and then takes the stage after that.

Karen Anne,

Don't feel too bad I read both of Barrack Obama's books, and you know how conservative I am. But as a conservative I still feel there are political issues that should not be political. I to agree with Mrs. McCain that the government has an obligation to treat all of it's citizens fairly and equally regardless of sexual preference.

If we the people are ever going to fix what's wrong with this country we need to stop putting so much emphasis on social issues and give a little ground to gain a lot. We need to focus on the real problems, before it's to late, ie. the housing market, the deficit, and the 'real' threats to our democracy.

Hope you enjoy your new book. Glad to see that you are enlightened enough to read it!

Karen Anne:  As far as Mrs. Bush goes ... I wanted to like her ... I did.  I knew of the many activities she quietly took part in.  I knew that her mother-in-law adored her ... and I think that's probably a hard thing to earn.  But every time I got to the point where I was about ready to say .. ok, she's probably an intelligent and good woman ... I would remember who she was married to.  Then all the doubts would rush back about her would rush back.  How in the world??????   As far as Ms. McCain goes, she learned much from her earlier contact and exposure to her father ... no this latter re-invention of his.  And, I suspect she grew up with just enough money and power to have honed the confidence and abilities to express them clearly and loudly without fear of reprisal.  I forgive the giggle or whatever it was that Jane saw ... as she's young.  If the Republicans were smart ... hers would be a voice that they would be cultivating for the future instead of .... well ... we'll just leave it at that.

You remain my AR political guru ... regardless of this latest Border trip ...

I'm in a red county, in a mostly red state; and I HAVE voted straight party blue, though I do not always do so. During the primary that gave President Obama the nod, my overwhelmingly red county somehow had Democrats everywhere on election day. What were they doing? Voting for Obama; because they thought Clinton was the stronger candidate, and they wanted to be sure she was not the Democrat's nominee. Silly Democrats! If left to our own devices, Hillary would have won the nomination.

I honestly believe that Republicans chose both candidates in the last election, and I love the irony that they are the reason we can save Hillary for another day. Obama inherited a crisis that had the potential to rival the Great Depression or a world war, along with hap-hazard "fixes" that had already been put in place. Regardless of what his popularity index is right now, our nation tetered on the brink and is still standing, in spite of that. To those who say the bail-outs did not work, I ask how they could so forget the depth of fear and economic failure after economic failure of the summer, fall, and winter of 2008. While we are not where we want to be, the falling dominoes have been slowed.

So stand back and wait, Hillary. Let the issues swirl around you. Republicans voted for you during the primary and they succeeded  in giving you a bye during a critical "no-win" time in our history. Your time's coming.

Geesh, who knew that Republicans could read and write? Will the wonders never cease?

Karen, you've taken a first step down a slippery slope.  If you're not careful next thing you know you'll be watching FOX and attending tea parties.  I look forward to seeing you at one!

Thanks for the great post.  I know how you feel because I've actually read a post written by some <gulp> liberals!
