Sooner or Later... Every Girl Needs An ECO

A few days ago... I wrote a post about the upcoming Clinique Bonus Event, which starts on Monday, September 6th here in Fort Worth, and about the wonderful "much-more-than-customer-service" my friend Jennifer at the Clinique Counter brings to me.

During that post, I mentioned in passing... sometime I call my "ECO."  It's a "girl thing"... so guys, if you want to turn the page right now... go ahead.  I won't feel slighted, here.

Sheltons Salon and Spa

I have been trying to grow my hair out.  I want it longer.  I just like the feel of it when it hits my shoulders... as it finally does.  Whew !

Anyway... just as an additional treat, I have what us older girls call a "standing" appointment at my hair salon.  Well, actually, I sit when I am there.  Why they call it a "standing..." I am not sure.

Regardless... my "standing" appointments are on Tuesdays and Saturdays... both at 11:30am.  I get my hair shampooed.  Both my Stylist Carol, and my fave shampoo chick, her name is Karen... give an absolutely incredible shampoo.  Even a tad of a neck massage, too.  Then... a dab of conditioner on Saturdays, and a bit of a "leave-in" on Tuesdays.

Yeah... it may sound excessive... twice a week... I know that.  BUT... it is my THERAPY.

For less than a THIRD of the cost of a weekly therapy session with a counselor, I get TWO full sessions... and I really do consider them "therapy" sessions... with Carol... my "Senior Designer" stylist at Sheltons Salon and Spa... in southwest Fort Worth.

But... here is where that ECO comes in.  Every once in a while... when I get up in the morning... upon seeing my hair in the mirror... it can actually look like I slept as if I were sleeping upside down... balanced on my head... and spinning around ON my hair... totally screwing up my "do."

When that happens... that's when my saving grace is my ECO.  It stands for "Emergency Comb Out."

I give Sheltons a frantic call.  ECO Alert, ECO Alert.  They are so kind.  They do their best to "work me in."  It only takes fifteen minutes to re-do and fix the unsightly damage my "spinning on my head" all night long has done.  But, whew !  Once I am done, I am SO glad I can squeeze in my ECO... my Emergency Comb Out.  (Whew x 2)

My big treat is to get a facial which I do about once a quarter or so because it feels so good.

I could use an ECO for my life right now. :)  I'm trying to think of where I could go for that...but now I'm off to bed.  Perhaps all will seem right in the morning...provided I'm not doing the Karen-Anne upside down head spin in my sleep. :)

It took me a moment to realize comment #2 was spam.  At first I was trying to unravel the joke he/she/it was intending.

Teral:  I have never had a facial, and I am sure one would feel absolutely wonderful.  I was considering having what Sheltons calls a back'cial... with is, of course, a facial on your back.  Wow... for me, that might be an even more relaxing treat.  I need to try both.

RE: the SPAM comment # 2:  I used to simply delete these darn things, but somewhere Active Rain suggested that we just click on the "report a concern" link in red that appears just to the lower right corner next to the time... which on comment # 2 is 1:39am.

That way, AR said it gives them a chance to track down the spammer, and try and block them from making any more spam comments in our posts.  That makes sense.  Once they try and track it down, Active Rain THEN deletes the comment themselves... although I believe we still get the "comment credit" for a comment being made on one of our posts.

Also... when we click on "report a concern" regarding a spam comment, Active Rain gives us a ten point bonus.  Not much, but I'll take it.  <smile>

NOTE:  About the spam that was in the # 2 spot... it is now 3:00PM Monday afternoon.  Apparently Active Rain has investigated comment # 2, decided it was spam, and then removed it.  Good Job AR !

Kristen:  I actually specialize in giving personal life ECO's.  That is just another one of my many talents.  <silly smile>  No need to think about it further... I can be available.  Sometimes morning brings a different way of seeing things.  As good old buddy Max Planck said... "When you change the way you look at things... the things you look at... change."

Sometimes it works well... other times... not so much.  And hey, don't knock the upside-down head-spin thingie.  It may not help your "do"... but it might help your mind and/or your brain.  Some things ya just never know about.  Take care... gentle huggs.  I am off to bed as well.

Hi Karen Anne... I can always hear the lilt in your voice when you have had your ECO.  Clearly it works as a form of therapy!

Posted by Steve Shatsky almost 8 years ago

Wow!  My hair treatments would leave your head spinning.  I think it comes from my former career.  When I worked in a lab  - I actually went to have my hair done twice a year.  Formal attire for a place like that was jeans and T-shirt hair away from your face so it didn't catch fire on a bunsen burner.  So under those conditions even that was considered excessive.  (I guess you see where the decision to color my hair that wasn't actually gray - was so monumental.)

Now - I have the mop streaked every 4 months and then the body wave every 7-8 months.  Which is a big upgrade from what I did in the past.

But what a great article about your hair stylist.  I should do one for Sarina.

This is one post I can totally relate to, hairdressing having been my first career............many times I got calls from my clients who needed an ECO after a night of "spinning" on their heads, as you call it Karen Anne............great fun post............so true that it's cheaper than a therapy session and does just about as good for the "head" in several ways.

Oh, you reminded me of the good old days.  I used to do this once a week (along w/ 10 min foot massage for $10).  It really helped me in so many ways.  Unfortunately, given my new biz, I no longer have the spending money nor the time to do this.  I was just thinking about this yesterday and I really do long for those days.  Maybe soon I can go back (but less often).

Karen Anne, my hair schedule would make your hair stand on end. I cut it when I get so sick of it. But oh, do I love the shampoo, I have done that just because I needed to destress!

I woke up this morning looking like you are describing. I must have slept on my head and turned round and round! My dog got scared! I really have a bad case of head hair goin. But I will just wash it.

I'm rather a high maintenance chick myself so I 'get' this on a visceral level. Unfortunately for me (and my beloved), I sleep on my face and wake each morning with my semi-bangs pointing upward and outward like a rhino horn. Thus, I have to wash my hair every single day, but it's worth it for the high shine it's known for. My personal 'therapy' comes in the form of a fabulous pedicure, a facial, or an afternoon looting Sephora. (Betcha didn't know I worked there for over a year!)

The biggest 'emergency' I experience is a "Lip Gloss Emergency". Nothing truly worthwhile can be achieved without it :)

That's hilarious. My kids need ECO's sometimes. It's all that curly curly on the top.

Steve:  All we need is an ECO... and somehow the world is a better place.  Now, if we could only get Shelton's to serve a side-dish of complementary bacon h'ors d'oeuvres... we'd have perfection.  <smile>

Jennifer in # 12:  The first thing we have to do is amend your "Lip Gloss Emergency"... LGE... and add a few words.  How about "Lip Application Re-Gloss Emergency."  That turns it into the acronym "LARGE."  Now, whenever you need to "re-gloss"... you can say you need a "LARGE."  Folks will then say... you need a "LARGE ?"  And, you can then say... "Exactly !"  Ahhh... the wonders of a warped mind.

Being a high maintenance chick is not a bad thing, especially if you can manage to maintain your self when your "staff" is not around.  Ummm... could we please either see a photo of you, your morning hair, and your semi-bangs, or perhaps a video.  I have always liked "pointers..." as I am sure your "beloved" does as well.

Pedicures... a fabulous form of therapy.  Sometimes they can be expensive, but if you have a pedicure, and can "foot" the bill... you will be fine.

Sephora... hmmm... I bet you have some great stories from your time there.  Hope things are well in Allentown.  Take care...

Ruthmarie:  Hmmm... never thought about doing my hair with a bunsen burner.  A good idea ?  Prolly not so much.  Working in that lab sounds pretty grueling.

I love it.  The "mop."  Streaked and permed.  I bet being in or near Westchester... that does not come cheap ?  And... if Sarina is as great as I imagine, and if she could ALSO be a source of referrals... a nice atta-girl blog post sounds perfect.

Thanks so much for your kind words about my post.  Carol... my ECO Queen... and perm queen and colorist... is fabulous.

Roger:  Yes, I remember you said you owned a Salon in your previous career.  But... when you come to think about it... you really have not changed careers.  As a hairdresser... you provided therapy, and as a decorator and stager-with-a-twist... you provide therapy as well.  What a guy !

Glad you liked the post... and glad you are moved and pretty close to being settled.  Now... maybe you could even take some time for yourself... IF... you can remember how to do that ?  I hope so.

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) almost 8 years ago

Debbie:  Having a "do" or an ECO once a week is great for the hair, and great for the soul as well.  And that foot massage sounds wonderful.  Sorry your new biz does not give you the funds nor the opportunity to continue your therapy.  Perhaps if you somehow could squeeze having it done once every three months or so... any possibility of that ?

I hope you get to go back.  Some things are worth "going back for."

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) almost 8 years ago

Andrea:  So, you cut your OWN hair yourself ?  Ummm... do you do your own dental work, as well.  Hey... get yourself a treat.  Or aren't you into pampering ?

I love it !  Your poor doggie got scared !  Poor lil pup.

Through the magic of Active Rain, I just "blew up" your profile picture, and see you have some "low maintenance" hair.  That wouldn't work for me.  I need much more hair to "hide inside."  And, I love the way it swings when I shake my head... as long as I have not managed to plaster it down with hair spray.

Give your poor dog a calming hug from me.  Maybe HE or SHE's the one who needs the therapy ?  <smile>

Lindsey:  I bet when your boys get a bit older... they will be absolutely fighting the girls away... cuz of their adorable curly hair.  Curly curly can be fun.  Funny... but with us girls, it is also funny that those of us with curly hair want it straight, and those of us with straight hair often want it curly.  But, that's why we have hairdressers and ECO's.  (whew x 2)

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) almost 8 years ago

Karen:  Have a great trip.  Hope it is a "real" trip rather than a "virtual" one.  With this post being my # 10 on that 30-in-30 thingie, I hope to have some posts for you to catch up on.

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) almost 8 years ago

Stewart:  I just took a very close look at your "do"... and I am guessing you won't be needing a perm very soon.  We need to get Jean to take you in to see her hairdresser... and get some longer locks growing there.  I bet you'd be even cuter... if that were possible.

By the way... about a month ago... after admiring her hair style, I blew up Jean's profile picture, and took it into Sheltons as a model for my Stylist Carol to do a perm and style.  It came out decently well, and as it relaxes a bit more... I think it will look quite nice.  I need to tell Jean that, and to thank her for being my unknowing "model."  <curly smile>

Ihave no idea why I just spend 20 minutes reading this post and the comments ... except it was facinating and even relaxing!  ...One might even say - therapeutic!  Thanks for all the light you bring into the world.....turning the page? - then I'd have missed it all!

Jack:  I think both myself and my commentors have tried very hard to make my posts, and the comments that follow... more of a dialogue and a conversation than most of the other "comment and run" posts.  It is rarely a case of "this side vs that side..." but more of "everybody pitches in."  And yes, it can be very relaxing, enjoyable, and even therapeutic.  Cool Beans !

With that in mind... maybe I should change the name of my blog to "Cool Bean Salad !"

I enjoy writing them and reading the comments, and also enjoy responding.  And, the commentors also seem to enjoy reading both the post and the comments... and you have SEEN how great they all comment.  It just makes it all nice.

Jack, you are very welcome.  Thank you so much for your kind comments.

Hi Karen Anne -

Well - the body wave (I don't do tight curls)  only needs to be done every 8 months or so.  I had my last wave done in February.  It should hold until the end of October. I'll probably have it done just before the holidays - and then I won't do it again until July of 2011.  I'm lucky that my  fine hair holds the wave for a long time.  Given  that my mop won't even hold a baret or clip without it (its that fine) I have to do something about the texture or it just randomly be flies everywhere.  Won't hold a style at all.   Even when I was in the lab - that much needed to be done. The streaking  was the same as  having the whole head done and having to maintain that every few weeks.  It looks best if I have them done every 4 months but  I went almost six months when closings weren't happening and it didn't look bad - just dark.  The advantage of streaks is you don't HAVE to do them so regularly. So I have  4.5 visits a year - they aren't cheap - but I think it all evens out in the end.

I know it sounds strange - but getting the hair lightened was a tough decision in a rough economy.  But the dark color really didn't look good on me at all. People told me it took at least 5 years off my face...

I will feature Sarina next time I see her!  She's a great gal.

Karen, are you talking about me?  Wow, I'm flattered.  However, in order to get my hairstyle you have to use my hairdresser.  That would be some twice weekly therapy for you to fly out here.

Posted by Jane Peters, Connecting you to the L.A. real estate market (Home Jane Realty) almost 8 years ago

Wow, I didn't know some people went to the hair salon twice a week.  I visit the hair salon every few months, and when I get home I finish the haircut my self.  I have been in the area for 9 years, and I am still looking for my Carol at a place like Sheldon's.

Ms Karen- I have straight hair so there isn't an ECO around that could help.  Some people have bad hair days, I'm having a bad hair life.  So, though I'm not a candidate for a weekly ECO, I could have a weekly EP (Emergency Pedicure).

Yeah... now I am an ECO-Broker.  A brand new "designation.:

Very, very sharp !  And you just have to know... I LIKE that kinda stuff.  From me... Queen of the Pun-sters... Excellent !

Everyone... we need to give Ms Prestwich some applause for that one.
