Meeting Cool People on Active Rain... the "Cleveland" Chapter...

Occasionally I will read an Active Rain post where the writer seems on a rant... maintaining that Active Rain is a "real estate" site... and all posts written and submitted to it... should be strictly "real estate" related.

My opinion... is that to keep posts ONLY to real estate... would rob Active Rain of so much of it's potential.

Here's what I mean:

I think real estate in particular, and life in general, is all about "relationships.  It is the "back and forth'ness..." the "give and take'ness" between people... that is important to me.  As far as real estate is concerned... it is also what brings me to choose who I would prefer to deal with... when conducting my business... and sending referrals.

Sure... professionalism and real estate knowledge are important.  But... when you can combine the two of those qualities with dealing with "really cool and caring people"... that's what "does it" for me.

Years ago I worked in the real estate world of Greater Cleveland.  I was born and raised in Cleveland, went to school there... taught school there... and worked as a Realtor for ten years there before I found it necessary to leave for the warmer climes of what I jokingly refer to as "The People's Republic of Texas."

Back to Active Rain.  Being from Cleveland, I really feel that in many ways I have never left.  And... I have continued to "keep tabs" on the Cleveland market, and to pretty much whatever was going on in Cleveland.  It is kinda-sorta like having "dual citizenship."

Through Active Rain... and through some of the non-real estate posts... I have come to know... and come to be acquainted... as well as one can by blogging and reading... with some really cool people.

There are many, many I could name... but here, I choose to mention three of my favorites.

The first is Barb Szabo .  She is a Realtor in Brecksville, Ohio with RE/MAX Trinity.  Both the professionalism she exudes, and just the way she shares herself, and comes across... impresses me.  I very much just know that if I were ever to return to Cleveland, she would be someone I would seek out.

Another Cleveland Rainer... or pair of Rainers... are Dan and Amy Schuman with Keller Williams.  They are in the Solon, Ohio market area.  I have read their blog posts for quite a while now, and they really impress me as well.  Very, very professional, and they seem like, again, what I would call "very cool people."

A third Cleveland Rainer who I noticed some time ago... is Svetlana Stolyarova with Local-n-Global Realty.  Svetlana works the Mayfield Heights, Richmond Heights, and occasionally Lake County, Ohio areas.

Svetlana seems like a real "sweetie."  When I comment on her posts, or when she comments on mine... she is ALWAYS such a positive person... and always makes me smile.

Sure... it is always great to read about real estate stuff on Active Rain.  BUT... it is primarily because I have been able to read posts about "other stuff..." about Barb, Dan and Amy, and Svetlana... that have allowed me to know WHO I would send either buyer or seller referrals to... the next time I have a customer or client for anyone in these market areas in Greater Cleveland.

Sooo... those of you who "insist" that Active Rain is ONLY for "real estate stuff"... and that other, more "personal" stuff belongs elsewhere... I think you are missing out.

Barb, Dan and Amy, and Svetlana... thanks for sharing yourself with me, and with all of your many blog readers.  It's nice to "meet" you.

Karen Anne:  I am with you 100% on this one.  It really does help to get to know the industry professionals in other markets.  When you know their personalities, you can really have a better sense of who to refer things to if an referral opportunity comes up.

Karen Anne, What a lovely post for all three of us Clevelanders! Thanks so much! It would be great fun for all of us to meet for lunch if you make a trip back to Cleveland. You know we have some great restaurants! I hope you don't, mind if I mention that my office is actually in Brecksville :) Thanks again!

Michael:  I appreciate your comment... and agree that posts SHOULD be about a little bit of everything.

By the way... the comments section of MY posts is where we all get to know each other, we go back and forth with our comments... and, just like this post above states... "it's a 'people' thing."

In your comment... you asked for referrals, and you listed your name, your six broker designations... and your connection with the Orange CAR.  That is considered COMMENT SPAM... and are in violation of the Active Rain Community Guidelines.

If you would be so kind as to edit your comment... and remove all but your comment on my post... you would bring your comment into compliance.  And, once again... thanks for the comment part of your comment.

I request that you edit your comment, and remove that personal advertising stuff.  I will then edit THIS comment... and remove my request to you concerning the Active Rain guidelines.  Thanks a bunch.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Chris Ann:  I think it is SO important to know the "personalities" of those I refer buyers and sellers to.  I could not imagine sending someone to an agent I did not know well enough to feel comfortable.  And obviously, me being me... that is critical.

Thanks so much for your comment... have a great weekend.

Barb:  I knew that about your where your office is.  I even looked up your office location on the Google map thingie by clicking on your address link below your picture.  I just got so excited about writing this post... that I typed Strongsville instead of Brecksville.  What I AM sure of, however, is that you do a wonderful job no matter what city we are talking about... LOL.  Glad you enjoyed the post... have a great weekend !

Karen Anne, Thanks again! I am always grateful for such nice comments from one of my peers. You have a nice weekend too. It's supposed to hit 45 degrees this weekend!!!!

Agreed! I'm amazed when I think about the wonderful friends I have made here at Active Rain.  If we only talked about Real Estate, it would be BORING.

Oh Barb:  Wow... 45 degrees.  Let me hitch up the ol' Honda CR-V and mebbe hit the road early.  Well... mebbe not.  Perhaps next weekend it might hit fifty.  Or maybe twenty.  Ya never know about Cleveland weather.

Anyhoo... I must be there on the 20th.  I have a ticket to see Celtic Woman at the State Theater on March 20th... which I believe is a Saturday.  Buying the ticket long-distance was my silly way of commiting to the trip.  The ticket is non-refundable, so now it would COST me... not to come.

I was thinking about going to a Cavs game... but those doggone tickets are like $500 a seat for something decent.  Thank You LeBron James... I am sure !

Chris:  Boring, yes... qute boring.  How many times can ya write about funky listing pictures, or pontificate on listing techniques ?  Have a great weekend !

Hi Karen Ann,

Great post, I always like to hear good things about people from all over.

Real Estate will always be about people, and people are not always about real estate.

Have a great weekend

Karen Anne,

I joined AR in order to be exposed to other real estate professionals. I love AR because I am getting a feel for the profession across the country, But I love AR most for the care and thoughtfulness on so many topics. I think it can only broaden our minds, put a smile on our faces and get us ready for the next bit of crazy that will surely come our way.

Right on, sister!

Karen Anne - What a wonderful person you are! I am really honored to be mentioned by you, especially in such a good company as Barb, Dan and Amy.

Are you coming on the 20th? Then we need to plan a dinner all together! And if you stay here till the 29th, I will have a big surprise for you.

I totally share and appreciate your sentiment about "double  citizenship". I'm afraid that I have more than two places which I still consider to be a home.

The idea of your post - to feature persons, not just posts - is amazing.

Karen Anne, what a nice post and we greatly appreciate all your kind words.  We feel blessed to have such professional agents from Cleveland here on AR, especially Barb and Svetlana, people who I have had the pleasure of meeting in person. Hopefully, we will be able to meet you as well because after all of our communication, we feel like you are one of us and we would really enjoy it.

Kevin:  this is one of the many things that makes Active Rain FUN... rather than just posting and blabbing only about real estate stuff.  BUT... I think these kinds of posts ARE about Active Rain.  They are about "The Rainers" themselves.

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) over 8 years ago

Linda:  I think there are MANY Rainers who have joined Active Rain for the same reasons that you have.  I am so glad you are here with us.

I like your expectations... broadening our minds, put smiles on our faces, and get us ready for the next bit of crazy.  It sounds great to me.

And... thanks for your kind words.  Take care...

Svetlana:  You are very welcome.  I remember when you first joined Active Rain.  All that enthusiasm... and you've kept it up.  And yes... you, Dan and Amy, and Barb... three winners in my book.

Right now I am thinking I am going to leave next weekend.  I re-joined AAA today, got my Triptiks, and am wrapping up loose ends.  Right now it looks ok... but who knows what might happen.  I hope it all works out and I get to come up for a visit.

And... featuring people... not just posts... well, it just seemed like a great thing to do... so I did it.  Thanks for your kind words.  :)

Hannah:  I know folks call the places like Facebook and My Space "social networks"... but for me, that's what Active Rain is.  On Facebook you might have nineteen gazillion "friends"... and there might be a thousand truckloads of folks "following" you... but... who cares ?  How is that "social ?"

I really prefer actually getting to know folks.  But... that is not everyone's cup of tea, so to speak.  And... that is just fine.  Everyone should make Active Rain work for them in the way that it "works" for them.  Thanks for your kind words... take care...

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) over 8 years ago

Jo:  Yes... getting to know the real person... not the stuff designations.  For me, that's what counts.  It is just a re-working of the old axiom... "I don't care how much you know, until I know how much you care."  It sounds like you and I, and just about everyone who has, and will comment on this post... is coming from.

Posted by Karen Anne Stone, Fort Worth Real Estate (New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County) over 8 years ago

Karen Anne, I agree with the relationships formed on Activerain.  I feel that so many folks are now my friends, including you!  You are always a delight.

Dan and Amy:  Why am I NOT surprised that you two have met both Barb and Svetlana in person ?  Way cool !  In many ways, I wish I still WAS in Cleveland.  The people are so friendly... not too much, but just enough to make Cleveland a very "homey" city... not that Fort Worth isn't.  But... it's different... as I am sure you understand.

Hopefully we will be able to meet if I can somehow make things work, and get myself up there.  Take care... and thank you for your kind words as well.

Ellie:  He ought to know better... but he is just doing his thing.  Not here, though.  And yes... we do like ours just the way it is.  I hope all is well in Ellicott City.  Maybe I will be able to swing through there in a round-about way if I end up making this trip of mine.  I just need to find a good place to get my hair done up there.  It takes a bit of work to get me "presentable."  LOL.  Maybe there is a good place across from your office.  I need an older chick who knows how to back-comb... LOL.

Barbara:  As they say down here in Fort Worth... Bless Your Heart !

I have so enjoyed reading all your posts about Searcy, and all those cool old-timey pictures you share.  I am especially attached to your recent photos of the folks at the beach.  The younger guy and girl, expecially the girl, in that one-piece bathing suit... SO reminds me of my Mom.  Jeez... I miss her.  That picture both made me smile, and brought a tear to my eye.

And yes, I consider you a friend, as well.  Have a great weekend.

Hi Karen Anne... what a nice introduction to 3 ActiveRainers from Cleveland!  Perhaps you could start a series of geographic posts... We could call it Karen Anne introduces you to... and you could focus on several agents from that city!

Posted by Steve Shatsky over 8 years ago

karen Anne,

I read your post, and then strted scrolling down checking some of the comments, and I knew what I wanted to say, and I got right here, and there was a last comment by Steve Shatsky. I do not know how he did it, but he managed to say exactly what i was going  to type here.

Good post (that is all I could add to Steve's comment)

ActiveRain is people. People live and work in and on real estate. People have hobbies, avocations, interests, families, relationships outside of real estate. Therefore, anything that people have to say is connected to real estate.

Posted by Russel Ray, San Diego Business & Marketing Consultant & Photographer (Russel Ray) over 8 years ago

Karen well said.  If AR was strictly about real estate I would not be here with my attention span I would be rather bored.  What I like about the site is the fact people share stuff about there world in many forms, photos humor words and then make connections with each other.  I especially like the trips I have taken right from my living room through the wonderful photos.
