Honoring Women's Wisdom...

In a recent post... submitted to two of the "comedy" groups... Jim Albano offered Careful what you say to your woman! to us for your reading pleasure... and hopefully a chuckle.

Although it was an attempt at humor, it did bring to mind a subject that is on the minds of some as we women grow older.  Of course, the subject is "the aging woman."

There are just too many people in this world who suffer from the perception that as a man grows older he looks distinguished, and as a woman grows older, she looks "extinguished."

The ancient religions have had for centuries the triple concept delineating the life-stages of maiden-mother-crone that affect all women.

Inherent in this concept is that during each of these three broad stages of a woman's life... the maiden... the mother... and the crone... she is honored for a different facet of her being.  As an elder... as a "crone," an older woman is revered for her knowledge... her acquiring of such a great degree of life's wisdom.

In the matrilineal, matriarchial and matrifocal societies that existed on this earth over thirty-five hundred years ago... the honoring of women during the latter stages of her life... during her "crone-hood..." was a commonplace and taken-for-granted fact of life.  The elder women of society being honored for their acquired wisdom.  What a concept !

How, when and where did older men come to be seen as distinguished, and our women elders come to be seen by so many... as extinguished ?  What a waste of talent.

Finally... Some Relief and Protection for the Polar Bear...

Recently I posted a story about our dear friends, the polar bears.  The Bush Administration had been dragging their feet, with the Department of The Interior carrying the Bush banner in reverse... as has been the case with just about everything either environmental-conscious or envirinmentally protective since 2001.

Finally today, the ruling came down from the Bush administration... when the Department of the Interior declared that the polar bear is now considered a "threatened specias"... and as such, it must be protected.

The continuing decline of the heretofore major ice cap in the Arctic sea has been worsening over the last fifteen  to thirty years, and scientists and environmentalists have been pojecting even additional losses.

As global temperatures rise, water currents change.  With the change in currents and the rising temperatures comes the melting of the ice caps.  As these glorious animals have adapted to living in frigid temperatures... which for them are required... the ongoing change in their habitat endangers their very being.

The disappearance of the historically massive ice areas endanger the polar bear because it diminishes the areas available for feeding grounds, and for breeding, for these majestic animals.  If something cannot be done to either slow down the disappearance of the ice, or even turn it around... extinction seems unstoppable.

How much longer America can sit idly by and watch the myriad of habitats for a variety of threatened animals gradually disappear remains a mystery.  But... if our national policy is not given a complete 180 degree turn-around... further distruction is inevitable.

We can only hope that a change is coming, and that the incoming administration will make appropriate revisions to our national policies.

We have been given this earth as a gift.  As it's inhabitants, we have been trusted to be it's keepers.  We are also expected to be able to hand it over to the generations to come in a condition that either mirrors how we found it, or in an improved condition.  If we are unable to do that... we have failed ourselves, our children, and our planet.

How the Housing Crisis became the Credit Crisis... "The Perfect Storm"... real estate version !

On Saturday Mornings, I usually begin my real estate weekend by driving about a total of sixty miles or so... visiting various open houses, or dropping in and visiting friends who are either past clients, or folks in my Top 33 Advocate Referral Group.

While I make the rounds, I usually listen to NPR... National Public Radio.  If I start early enough, I listen to those two Car Talk nuts from MIT, and then some silliness called "Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me."

This afternoon, just after "Wait Wait"... the NPR series "This American Life" aired a program titled The Giant Pool of Money .  I must tell you that I was just blown away by this incredibly comprehensive story that unwound and took apart... piece by painful piece... the horror that began as the Housing Crisis, and slowly over a period of about four years... evolved or deteriorated (take your pick) into what we've been calling "The Credit Crisis."  (Did anyone else happen to hear it ?)

Over the next week I am going to take this entire program... which featured many blow-by-blow recitals of the various stages and happenings of this mess... and break it down into a story and terms I can better share and make sense of myself.

As a Professional Realtor, I have always prided myself on what I thought was my fairly comprehensive degree of knowledge concerning mortgage finance programs, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and FHA qualifying guidelines, and my knowledge of mortgage and closing documents like the 1003, credit reports, FICO scores, VOD's, VOE's, appraisals and LTV's, and the HUD-1.

I must say... that during this program, I learned so much about what really happened to create this mess... and learned it from a pretty knowledgeable group of industry insiders who along the way... found themselves smack-dab in the middle of it.

I am kind of curious, though.  How interested do you think Realtors would be... as far as learning more about the in's and out's of what made all this happen ?  Will anyone be interested ?  Or will this just be another example of this Realtor going overboard about deciphering both the Mortgage Crisis and the Credit Crisis ?

Wanna know more ?  Please give me some opinions, and ask whatever questions you have.  Maybe between our answers we'll come up with some good ideas.

House Passes Housing Bill w/ $7,500 tax credit... Bush Threatens Veto

Thirty nine Republicans in the House of Representatives joined Democrats in approving a new housing bill that focused on rescuing hundreds thousands of homeowners current at risk of foreclosure.

Even though the White House threatened to veto the bill, the bi-partisan effort was attempting to steam through the House... hoping to miss hitting President Bush's brick wall.

Hoping to break the current log jam in the mortgage markets, the bill would expand the authority of the FHA, and would strengthen both the Federal National Mortgage Association (commonly referred to as Fannie Mae) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Mortgage Corporation (commonly known as Freddie Mac.)

An additional feature of this rescue bill would create a $7,500 tax credit for first-time homebuyers that would hopefully encourage sales and slow falling home prices.  The bill, if passed, could have a major effect on home purchasers considering buying homes in Texas during the coming months.

As is typical of many in their party, Republican House leaders criticised the bill as an early Christmas Present that would have the effect of bailing out home speculators and irresponsible borrowers.

When those same Republican House leaders were asked about previous "bailouts" that rescued major businesses, the questions went unanswered.
